Stanton – On December 21, 2013 at 6:39 PM Mill Creek Fire Company was alerted to a multi-family dwelling fire at 5609 Old Capitol Trail just off of Kirkwood Highway. Original reports indicated the roof was on fire. When firefighters from Mill Creek, Cranston Heights and Minquas arrived heavy fire was showing through first floor windows. The fire spread up through the interior of the building and into the second floor apartment. Over 50 firefighters battled the blaze and were able to extinguish the fire before it caused more damaged to the rest of the 100 year old structure. Six individuals were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross. Three dogs in the basement of an adjoining apartment were rescued. Additional resources from Hockessin, Elsmere, Five Points and Belvedere Fire Companies responded to the scene. Three ladder trucks were placed in service to assist with roof ventilation. New Castle County paramedics were also on the scene. No injuries were reported with firefighters or occupants of the building. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire. Firefighters remained on the scene for almost two hours. Old Capitol Trail was shut between Delaware Park Blvd and Telegraph Road. Wilmington Manor and Avondale Fire Companies provided cover up services to Mill Creek’s two stations.
