October 6th, 2013 – Mill Creek Fire Company members along with our brothers from Hockessin Fire Company took a moment to honor the 81 firefighters across America that died in the line of duty in 2012. All 81 names including a firefighter from Delaware were read as each of the two bells on the Bells of Remembrance trailer was ringed.
The Bells of Remembrance project was started by Brother David Schlatter, soon after the September 11, 2001 attacks, to honor the victims that perished during this horrible day in American history.
The bell trailer seen in the photos is known as the “National Fallen Firefighters Bells”. There are numerous plaques on the trailer listing the names of the 346 FDNY firefighters killed during on 9-11 along with three retired members who died helping at the WTC.
The bells on the various trailers were originally retired church bells, some over 100 years old and weighing 5,000 pounds, and were donated to the Bells of Remembrance project.
Mill Creek Fire Company is planning a bell ringing event each year to honor the fallen fighters across America.
