High Rise Fire - Woodlea Apts - 5400 Fairmont Drive

On January 13, 2010 at 4:10 PM Mill Creek Fire Company was dispatched to a high rise apartment building fire at Woodlea Apartments (Pike Creek Valley) with subjects reported trap. The original dispatch inlcuded Hockessin, Aetna and Cranston Heights Fire Companies. New Castle County police were also responding to the alarm due to the nature of the call reporting subjects trapped. The alarm was escalated when firefighters arrived and had smoke showing. Mutual assistance was provided by Elsmere, Christiana and Belvedere fire companies. As firefighters were arriving on the scene the police located a burn victim. EMTs and paramedics quickly attended to the victim as firefighters brought the fire under control. Approximately 50 firefighters were on the scene. Firefighters checked on the safety of the residents and assisted individuals temporarily displaced by the fire and smoke. No other residents of the 100+ unit building were injured or trapped. The alarm was brought under control in 45 minutes and residents were allowed to return to their apartments. Mill Creek Fire Company wants to recognized the New Castle County police officers for quickly arriving on the scene and assisting with the care and evacuation of the burn victim. Woodlea Apartments is a six story building with fire sprinklers and has 104 apartments.
