Water Rescue

Tuesday, January 3, 2023

January 2, 2023 – at 1:10 PM Mill Creek Fire Company was dispatched to an ice rescue at the New Castle County Carousel Park off of Limestone Road in Pike Creek Valley.   A multi-agency response was made with units from Christiana Fire Company (marine unit), Cranston Heights Fire Company, Goodwill Fire Company (marine unit), Hockessin Fire Company,  Holloway Terrace Fire Company (marine unit), Minquas Fire Company  (marine unit), New Castle County Paramedics, Swift Water Dive Team, Port Penn Fire Company (marine unit), Townsend Fire Company (dive team), and the City of Wilmington Fire Department.

Original reports indicated a dog had fallen through the ice at the Enchanted Pond.  A man, who was the owner of the dog, had gone into the pond to rescue the animal and started to struggle in the freezing water.   A good Samaritan had thrown the individual a life ring and was clinging to the ring as first responders from across New Castle County were responding.

The New Castle County 9-1-1 Center was getting multiple calls about the subject and dog in the pond.   Approximately twelve minutes from the original dispatch, the individual was pulled to the banks of the pond by bystanders.   EMT’s from Mill Creek Fire Company and the New Castle County paramedics treated the man and he was transported to the Christiana Hospital.    Units on the scene had to contend with muddy conditions due to the warm outside temperatures and soft ground.

All units cleared the park by 3:07 PM.
