January 18, 2019 - A dramatic icy water rescue unfolded at the pond at Carousel Park off of Limestone Road in Pike Creek Valley. A man and his dogs broke through the ice covered pond trapping the man in the icy waters until rescue crews from multiple agencies arrived on the scene. The man was able to throw his dogs to safety up on the ice but could not pull himself out. Fortunately there was a person walking nearby and heard his call for help which summoned twelve fire companies to the park at 2:50 PM.
Mill Creek Fire Company was nearby in the park handling a fire alarm at the Carousel Park riding stables when they were contacted by the NCC Fireboard of the man in the water. Crews arrived within minutes of the call and found the man about 40 feet off the banks of the pond. New Castle County activated its special operations dive and swift water rescue teams to respond to the pond. Marine units from Brandywine Hundred, Delaware City, Goodwill, Holloway Terrace, Minquas, Minquadale and Port Penn Fire Companies responded. Assistance was also provided by Belvedere, Cranston Heights, Christiana and Hockessin Fire Companies along with the New Castle County Paramedics.
Three rescuers went into the icy water and pull the man to safety. He was taken to the Christiana Hospital. The dogs were safe and taken to the park office for family members to pick up. All crews departed from the scene at 3:25 PM.
