Pike Creek Valley - On Sunday March 12, 2017 at approximately 5:25 AM Mill Creek Fire Company and neighboring fire companies were alerted to a commercial structure fire located at the vacant Pike Creek Valley Bowling Lanes and Charcoal Pit. First arriving apparatus reported the structure heavily involved in fire throughout the building.
Within minutes a second alarm was sounded. Firefighters fought the blaze from the perimeter of the building. No one was permitted to advance any hose lines into the structure due to the intensity of the fire and known hazardous conditions inside the building. At 6:00 AM a third alarm was sounted.
Over 60 fire fighters from Mill Creek, Cranston Heights, Elsmere, Hockessin, Minquas, Newark, Five Points, Wilmington Manor, Belvederee, Christiana, Wilmington Fire Department (Station 6), Avondale (PA), Kennett Square, (PA), Fire Companies fought the fire for over four hours before the scene was placed under control. Six ladder trucks surrounded the building flowing water on to the structure. Six fire hydrants were utilized for the water supply.
In addition to the fire fighters at the scene, Talleyville Fire Company and Brandywine Hundred Fire Company responded to provide cover-up for Mill Creek Fire Company. Numerous ambulances and paramedics units responded. The Saint Francis Hospital responded wiht their rehab unit providing hot coffee anc hot chocolate to the firefighters.
Due to the extreme low temperatures and thousands of gallons of water the area around the building became treaches with large amounts of ice. No injures were reported and the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the alarm. A special thank you to the Linden Hill Wawa for assisting with food for the firefighters.
